Manchester was settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community. The town of Hartford once included the land now occupied by the towns of Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. In 1783, East Hartford became a separate town, which included Manchester in its city limits until 1823.
Newington is an older, mainly residential suburb located in Greater Hartford. The Connecticut Department of Transportation has its headquarters in Newington.
The original inhabitants of what we now call Portland belonged to a Native American tribe known as Wangunk (“big bend,” referring to the Connecticut River which curves around half the Town’s perimeter). They arrived in the area between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago, surviving on local game and their own crops. The first European-Americans came to the Portland area in the 1650’s.

Vernon, originally part of Bolton, Connecticut, was incorporated as a separate township in October 1808. Vernon contains the borough of Rockville, incorporated in January, 1889.

Windsor was the first English settlement in the state of Connecticut. The town was settled in 1633 and named in 1637.
WINDSOR LOCKS, CT
Windsor Locks was named after a set of canal locks which began construction in 1827 and opened in 1829. Windsor Locks was incorporated as a town in 1854.
